Nobody calls. That is the problem with an outdoor yard.
Motion sensors do not work on an open pile with wind, rain, raccoons and a loader parked where it cools and ticks for an hour. So most yards have no after-hours signal at all — the discovery is a cut in the fence found the next morning, and the honest answer to who was called is that nobody was, because nothing told anyone anything. Cameras that are watched change that in a way an alarm on this property type never will: someone sees a vehicle backing up to the rear fence line at 2 AM, speaks to it through the yard speakers, and you get the footage and the plate rather than a hole and a guess about what was taken from a pile nobody counts by the piece.

It does not. Nothing on the market stops a determined crew from cutting steel — the point where you can still change the outcome is earlier than that. Crews scout in daylight, and a yard that visibly has coverage on the rear and side runs gets crossed off in favour of one that does not. For the attempts that still happen, the value is a plate, a vehicle and a time, which is what turns a repeat problem into a police file that goes somewhere instead of a series of unrelated reports.

Then do not let anyone sell you a rebuild. Licence conditions differ from one municipality to the next in what they ask for on coverage, retention and how footage is produced on request, so we read yours and confirm what you already satisfy before proposing anything. If your scale house and transaction record are compliant and your actual loss is at the back fence, the honest scope is two or three positions on the rear perimeter and nothing else touched.

It does, and standard commercial cameras hung on a scrap yard are consumables. What survives is sealed housings rated for particulate, mounts that are isolated from structures the shear and baler shake, and cable in conduit rather than exposed runs that get snagged by a loader bucket. Mounting position matters more than the camera specification — most failures we are called to replace were mounted somewhere that was convenient rather than somewhere that was quiet.

Public-lane customers already expect a scale ticket with their name on it, so the camera is not the new part. Coverage at the scale is framed and positioned around the vehicle and the load rather than the counter, which is what a transaction dispute actually needs, and it is what keeps a customer who says there was more copper in that bin from becoming a standing argument. We have not seen a yard lose retail volume over it.

Fixed cameras belong on things that do not move: the fence line, the gate, the scale, the equipment row and the office. Sightlines into the yard interior get blocked by whatever is stockpiled that month, which is why interior coverage is done from height with pan-tilt-zoom positions that can be re-tasked rather than from low fixed mounts that a pile buries in a week.

That deters casual entry and it is genuinely better than nothing.
